He drove a pickup truck. He was about 45 with a beard and he didn’t say much.

He loaded Eleanor’s three suitcases into the back of the truck without comment. Helped her into the passenger seat and asked her where she was headed.

Old Howerin Property, Eleanor said. Off County Road 412. Carl nodded. He started the truck.

I know it, he said. Eleanor looked at him. You know it, she said. Everybody up here knows it, Carl said.

The Howerin Cottage. He pulled out onto the road. Why would everybody know it? Eleanor asked.

Carl glanced at her sideways. He took a second to answer. Then he said, “Lady, I don’t know who you are, but that cottage has been the talk of this county since I was a kid.”

Eleanor felt something change in her chest. Something small and hard and electric. “Why?” She said.

Carl drove for a moment in silence. Then he said, “Maybe you better see it for yourself.”

The truck climbed up into the foothills. The rain stopped. The sun came out behind the clouds.

The road got narrower and the houses got farther apart and the trees got taller.

40 minutes later, Carl turned off the paved road onto a dirt one. The truck bumped over potholes for another half mile.

And then, at the end of a long driveway lined with old oak trees, the truck stopped.

Carl killed the engine. He pointed through the windshield. “There it is,” he said. Eleanor looked, and what she saw was not what she remembered.

The cottage she remembered from her childhood had been a small weathered building, one story, maybe 400 square ft, a wooden door, couple of windows, a tin roof.

What she was looking at now was a building that was clearly the same cottage, but somebody had been taking care of it.

The wood was painted. The tin roof was patched but solid. The windows had clean glass and intact frames.
